From the economical standpoint: Yes, you should do it. Buy it, sell it for 170$ and buy some games or trade your 3DS for an XL with the profit.
If you are unsure about it for whatever non-economical reason: Tell him that he can sell it for more than 100$.
If he insists that he doesn't care there are two possibilities:
a) If you still feel bad about it: Don't do it. You have an easy excuse, just tell him that you're not interested because you already have one.
b) Else: Do it.
