I think your statement in bold speaks volumes.
I believe the PS3 has reached a sufficient mass that it will be a success for Sony, but it cost them dearly in losses to do it compared to the PS2 ($2 b in losses FY 2007 and approx $1 b in losses so far FY 2008). You said yourself that the PS2 had little real competition, yet you seem to believe that the PS3 will achieve the same level of success even though it was launched at a much higher cost and has two strong competitors. The PS2 also had a large number of exclusives, quite a few which have gone multi-platform this generation, and throw in the fact that PS2 kept BC with the PS1, and you have yet another disadvantage. The PS3 has 4 difficult hurdles to overcome compared to the PS2. How do you figure it's going to overcome them so handily? Please explain, item by item, how each of the 4 can be completely overcome:
1. Double the launch price
2. Loss of many exclusives
3. Uneven and dropping BC
4. Two strong competitors (360 and Wii)
Please don't try and counter the BC issue by saying that people can keep/buy a PS2... people who bought a PS2 could have kept/bought a PS1 for BC, so that doesn't somehow counter the advantage of being able to sell/eliminate a secondary console with the purchase of a new console.
I would give the PS3 an advantage for having Blu-ray, but until it seriously competes with normal DVDs, I can't see how that will make a difference... Blu-ray is still an early-adopter feature at this time.
