In doing so I came to realize that if you save before you pick up the spheres it doesn't mean that they are there when you reload. I also found that if a sphere is there during the night and it switches to daytime, the sphere is likely to evaporate before you get to it.

I didn't notice the day-night switch one, but regarding reloading, the sphere will still be there. Collectibles are such a low loading priority though that they won't load until nearly everything else has, so you might have to wait a minute or two for them to appear.

If you get there just before the night/day switch and there is a sphere, when the daytime notification appears the sphere will evaporate.
