hmm had this happen before
most likely it b/c the vhs is copy protected its like a special signal that goes through the composite cable and the dvd recognizes it, i also had it happen while trying to record some tv programs on dvd
the only thing i could suggest is a different dvd format +- r and rw's or if possible find the program on the net there are a few good sites that have alot of past tv programs and movies
