Personally, I would expect Sony and Microsoft to release a system with a GPU which performed in a similar range to the Radeon HD7750 or HD7770.

As much as a GPU that is more in line with the HD 7970 would match what they did last generation, I'm not convinced either company wants to duplicate their strategy. There previous approach increased the price of their systems, lost them substantial money, it lowered the reliability of the XBox 360, and it cost Sony the bulk of their existing userbase.

Worse that that is that the GPU's in the PS3 and X360 only used 60-80 watts.   As I noted above, the 7950 and 7970 use 180-250 watts.  The ability to dissipate that much heat simply doesn't exist...economically.

To be clear, I was talking about what I could see as the high end of what they would likely do; not necessarly the hardware they would choose.

I find it more common to see people argue that Sony and Microsoft will produce hardware that matches the latest and greatest hardware than to see people argue that the hardware will be relatively under-powered; so I generally aim to the upper end with expectations as "this is the best I could see them do" rather than the low end of "this hardware is at least as powerful as I expect".

I agree with your assessment of the HD 7770 being the likely high end they'll go with.  I myself have stated it many times here and elsewhere.

I brought up the wattage figures to give other readers workable numbers as to why those higher end GPU's are not going to be considered by MS and Sony at all by comapring them to what Sony and MS put in their consoles last generation.
