Although this might be obvious, I'd attribute it to being the same as LittleBigPlanet vs. New Super Mario Bros.  They're both 2D platformers, but they have very different feels and ideas - same with LBP Karting vs. Mario Kart.

Is there going to be custom / create your own tracks?  That would be pretty awesome but not sure how that would be implemented for online play (fairness).  Offline multiplayer would be a blast to race on your own track with friends.

Yeah you will be able to make your own tracks and modes.
