I understand the point you're getting at so I'm not challenging that, but I think this is just a common misconception.  Sony lost all the profit from the PS2 era, but on the whole their gaming division is still very much in the black because of the PS1.  It would take a few more years of big losses from them to move them into the red.

On the other hand, Microsoft's gaming division are still in the red on the whole because of all the losses they sustained with the original Xbox and during the launch of the 360.  They're turning that around now with nice profit margins from the 360, though.

So again, I do see what you're getting at with the whole twisting thing, just not particularly the best example :P

Add to this FY2010 and FY2011 (the FY/E 2010 is Sony FY2009) and you have a nice red number.
