I just can't see any other reason they won't cut the price. They were are in position to put their foot on Sony's throat on several occasions with a price cut this gen, and they didn't, which leads me to believe they still want to turn a profit on the console. |
The issue is "what would a price cut do?"
They still have a big lead on ps3 in usa sales. They are equally behind in Europe, and Japan will not budge significantly towards 360.
So, if they cut price, they may have a minor gain in usa, their price cuts in europe haven't really changed results, and japan price cuts only last a few weeks (but in japan if they sell double nothing, they are still at nothing)... Meanwhile they would tick off the people who are taking advantage of the $99 xbox deal.
I think MS is looking at the next generation. And don't really see much left to win this gen (sluggish economy and 7 years into the gen for them). And MS has to be really happy with the results this gen... Assuming Sony releases a new console next year as well, MS will be able to brag that they have had the longest non-product replaced console in history, they can brag that sales will be in the 70 million range, and that up until the end of this year or early next they will have held 2nd place.
They are better off to stand where they are, and continue to ramp up for next year's next gen launch. Innovation and big sales figures are done for this gen. At E3 there was no one showing any amazing new technology. There were new IPs but, I didn't see anything new in any of the announced games by any of the console vendors. The only real tech at e3 was SmartGlass and the Wii U tablet. Both have uses but were unimpressive.
