Interesting read.
Other things I'd like to pitch in, which I've pieced together through what I've heard elsewhere, so may not be accurate when footnoted:
- The Republicans only really became rooted in the South on a national level after Nixon's Southern Strategy.
- It was Pat Buchanan's run for President which really got the Evangelicals mixed into the core of the Republican Party.
- Before Roe V Wade, religion was not a part of the conservative mantra, at all. This was due to the different sectors of Christianity not being unified, and deeming each other as separate religions. As such, no candidate could really talk about their religion without fear of alienating a serious number of voters. Abortion changed all this, as the groups got together to fight the ruling... thus the "Christian Right" banner was born.
