Because most other big film franchises have grown immensely in the foreign market during the last few years (even while they get smaller (sometimes) in USA). Good examples are the Transformers franchise, Pirates, Harry Potter and heck, even Twilight. |
Transformers was always more popular internationally, though it's true that Dark of the Moon skyrocketed in foreign markets. Similarly, Harry Potter was always bigger internationally. Pirates has been twice as big internationally as it was domestically since the second freaking movie, which came out a long time ago.
We don't have any indications within the franchiwse itself that Batman will see significant gains internationally vs. domestically. I'm not saying it won't happen. I'm saying that we have no reason, currently, to think it will.
Or to think it will beat out Avengers on opening weekend, while I'm on that point
