My mark at school put me in the top 5%. I recently graduated with honors at a top 20 (in the world) university.
I acknowledge that there are many people smarter than me, but I can, without bragging, state that I am smarter than average.
It is definitely a combination of genetics and education. When I was at high school, I simply cruised on my intelligence and did alright. When I came to university, I was surrounded by people whose intelligence ranges from brilliant through to genius. I had to put in a lot of effort to attempt to keep up with them, and I learnt a lot by doing this.
