Making sense of American political history

It's long and meandering. To tell the truth, i've been trying to make this thread several times over the past month, but i can never really summarize my theme in a way that doesn't leave out large patches of American history that are critical to making the point

Long story short: The Rise of Industry and big business, and how big business and the elements opposed to big business (whoever that would be: agriculture, slaveholders, poor immigrants, organized labor, or the socially disenfranchised in later years) is the foundation of American political history. Perhaps i should have said that somewhere in the OP.
