He's Scottish and from Edinburgh. As much as I would like to allow a poor choice of words, I highly doubt he didn't say what he meant to say.
The Scots that the people from Eastern Scotland speak is far easier to understand and less prone to misunderstanding than the Scots that people from Western Scotland or the Highlands speak. Edinburgh is also perhaps the most educated city in Scotland, with Glasgow closely in second. I offer Glasgow as second largely because of the neds in Glasgow who defy education.
A good example of Western Scots would be the works of Robert Burns, such as Auld Lang Syne.
