lol at the venom in here because Martin killed off your favorite character or something. The books are fantastic. Game of Thrones might drag on a bit if you've seen the first season of the show since it was pretty much a beat by beat adaptation. A Clash of Kings is where the TV series started to diverge more. Even so, I'd recommend starting from the beginning since there were a few plot points left out, plus some of the characters were removed/merged/renamed in the TV series.
