I consider Cobain to be somewhere between Pol Pot and Stalin in terms of negative effect on mankind, but his death led to the formation of the Foo Fighters which is a great band. Nirvana was holding Dave Grohl back from greatness. 

I just happen to think the opposite. Dave Grohl was pulled to greateness by Cobain and than sank back to mediocrity, which given today music level seems good for some.  Nirvana is one of the greatest bands of all time. Foo Figthers is just meh.
