You are mistaken. Porting usually costs around 10%-20% of the cost of the game itself, if we are talking an average of 20 millions to create a game, that is between 2 and 4 millions to create the port. To recover that investment the company needs to sell between 60.000 to 120.000 copies of the game and even if the install base is small that number is somewhat easy to achieve. The ports will not be VERY profitable, but any additional copy beyond 120.000 is pure profit for the company so it is a very low risk investment.

Actually, to be able to release the same across 3 plataforms instead of just 2, will be one of the main reason the publishers will try to slow the jumping to the next generation as much as possible, because now their games can earn more money with little more effort.
