Connection would be something like: "I have certain preferences in right and wrong that people who are theistic don't agree with. Because theism gets in the way of these views, I need to attack theism, and eliminate it, to make sure my views of right and wrong end up being what humanity subscribes to". So, existence of God ends up being determined by agreement or disagreement with values people have.
Communists in Russia did the same thing, with the Orthodox Church, in order to clear the way for their atheistic views of the state as the god, and Marx's economic determinism.
