This is why FF7 is held higher then most other FF games, it's because of all the side stuff you can do that wasn't part of the main game but were optional challenges.
-Want to raise chocobos? then get a gold one and find knights of the round
-you like fighting tough bosses? You got two weapons to kill
-mini-games and challenge battles? Head on over to the Gold Saucer and go wild. Win Cloud final limit break, Omnislash
-you just want to play the story? ignore the above and beat Sephiroth
-you like tower defense games? Then head NE from Junon and protect the Phoenix. Reward = Phoenix materia.
-Want to customize your characters? play around with different combinations of materia, and add the magic/skills/traits you want them to have.
-There are two optional characters you can get, also if you do get them they have their own side stories.
-------------
I've played FF9 a few years ago, FF7 many times years ago so those aspects I remember the most, I haven't played 7/8/9/10/12 in a while. Yet as you can see I can still recall a lot of aspects the game has. This is what makes FF7 memorable, and if you genuinely don't like it then you might not be a fan of the story but you can't deny at how well executed the game is in term of sales, fans, and content. its still either #1 or #2 top download on PSN. :)
