AT&T's a joke! We were paying $42/m for 6mbps internet, but were only getting 3.5mbps on a good day. Cox was offering 18mbps for $45/m, but we went with the 30mbps deal for $65/m (like $50/m for the first few months), and were getting 30-33mbps at any given time.
We also switched our landline from AT&T to Cox, which is why we could justify paying for higher priced internet. AT&T was charging us about $90/m for unlimited long distance, caller ID, the works. Cox was offering that for $9.99 for the first three months, and only $29.99 after that. Overall we went from paying almost $150/m to about $95, while we increased our internet speed almost 10-fold and kept the same level of phone service.
But the only reason my parents switched is because I made a point that the competition offers much better services. Most older folks stick with AT&T because they've traditionally been a reliable brand, and these people are unaware that any better alternatives exist, which is why AT&T can get away with such absurd pricing.
tl;dr: Fuck AT&T.
