You get unlocks, but they're cosmetic unlocks (change the appearance of your character). I kinda prefer it this way, because it means that as soon as you start playing, you're already on the same level as everyone else - it's your skill (and knowledge of the maps) that can set you apart.
I also vouch for Starhawk multiplayer being good. The mix of RTS and TPS is unlike anything I've really ever played before. There's strategy involved in nearly every decision you make. It's a blast (and LBI are giving it good post-release support, too).
edit: Oh, and about the single player, I certainly enjoyed it. But I'm sure you've already read - it's about a 5-6 hour tutorial that prepares you for the multiplayer. It's certainly not one of the best I've played, but definitely not one of the worst either.
