This. While I didn't like the gameplay in Resistance 2 and Retribution (again, they tried to make a COD clone), lots of things were introduced (gray tech, ancient race on earth, the real chimeara, the chimeara planet, European invasion of Russia, Grayson dissapearing). Things that should have been deepened but were almost completely ignored by Resistance 3.
Back when Resistance 2 was announced, they hype for the game was bigger than the hype for Killzone 2 was! But Resistance 2 alienated the FOM fans too much.
I'm not saying Sony should continue the franchise, it's ruined. Although I would like a remake which takes a different route story wise.
