It is a demo. A demo is something given out or sold at a cheaper price in order to make people buy the full game.
Now I personally think they are hugely ripping people off with the $40 price tag. I know its a exceptionally large demo but to expect people to buy that and then pay full price for the game just seems crude to me. Personally I think they should either do what other people have suggested and offer a discount on the final game or sell prologue for a more reasonable price of around 10-20 dollars.
