It's very, very easy to downplay this. The consoles and handhelds are sold separately. The Game Boy Advance was much more popular than the GameCube, but still ownership of both devices was limited enough to stunt Nintendo's connectivity efforts in that age. PS3 is only barely more popular than GBA, and Vita hasn't gotten to GameCube levels yet
