Actually it looks like they are doing the same thing as Apple, but not in the same approach. For Example an iPhone 4 could upgrade to iOS 5, but they dont get Siri. It's the same thing with WP7.8. WP7.8 is basically the same as WP8 in terms of user interface, but it is different on the developers side. WP7.8 only suports single core processors WP8 supports up to 16cores (That is strangely huge). The only problem for WP7.8 users is they will only get apps that support .net, but WP8 users can get apps that are Core CL, The changes also mean that developers can use native C and C++ libraries, alongside SQLite and Direct X support.
