Also Epic put a lot of effort into getting the engine in devs hands, providing it for free for teaching institutions, and later providing the free UDK for indie devs plus their Make Something Unreal competition. This all basically means that most devs working in the industry has used UE at some point so it is easier to get new stuff up to speed with the tools.

It also helps that UE is a very mature proven engine with great tools and is highly scalable to support a wide range of hardware with a lot of 3rd party add-ons and asset libraries already in place.

 

Tho Gamebryo is going to be the go to engine from now on
