I haven't seen a megaton announced at E3 since Genji back in 2006. Ok maybe not, there was Wii Music in 2008. Still the fact there's still confusion about whether the Wii U is a new console or not shows that the average consumer doesn't really notice what's going on at E3.
AC3 and Last of Us were hyped prior to E3 which is why they're two of the most watched E3 videos as people really wanted to see them in action. There are more effective means for 'exposure' than E3.
