I remember only beating it three times in a row. There was a stage that you're supposed to enter a door and 20% of the time the console would freeze while entering the building and I had to restart. I was literally praying to get through every time. Since there were no save files I never managed to beat it more than three times (my mum would turn off my nes or the damn door would do it for me).
The first playthrough was easy, the second a bit more difficult and the thrid quite challenging, but not ridiculously like Demon's Souls.
Good times...
