Since performance varies wildly during the game I'm regularly revisiting the graphics options, that breaks immersion. In console games all that balancing work has been done for you. Not always to the best result but you can simply enjoy the game instead of having to reload after changing certain graphics options.

Seems to me like that is exactly the point. If you have a powerful enough PC you can run pretty much any game smoothly at max. It's not that hard with all of the console ports these days.

True, I need to upgrade my pc again. Last game that ran completely smooth in 1080p was Portal 2. However graphics don't matter enough to spend money on pc upgrades instead of more games :)
