I am mostly in agreement with Kasz on the broader issue. Obviously illegal immigration needs to be checked, and i never understood why the boarder wasn't yet more secure than it already is. I just dislike some of the methods that seem to be proposed for dealing with the problem (like citizen border patrol militias, yikes).

Because politicians are only interested in courting the growing latino vote. And to come out as tough on border security would be detrimental to that.

I think a tough but fair system that didn't seem like it was founded in anti-Latino racism (which so many current harsher immigration bills have undertones of) would be received well enough, especially if Latinos knew it would mean they would actually get something resembling an American standard of living by coming to America, due to cleaning out the undermarket that thrives by exploiting their illegal status.

Then there goes the cheap labor, which hurts businesses. Businesses who fund campaigns and who polticians invest in. Politicians won't crackdown on illegal immigration because its good for them, one way or another.
