What bothers me about this list is how you're exactly right, but devs/publishers don't seem to realise.
One game sets a trend, gets copied a lot, and then another game comes along to set a new trend.
What makes these developers in the 'gets copied a lot' part think that copying a pre-existing formula is going to get them the incredible results they want? It's probably going to bring them limited success, but more likely than not they're just going to fail - because people would rather buy the real thing, rather than a clone.
I get that it's a risk to make an untested formula for a game and release it, but it nearly always reaps better results than copying something that's already been done!
