i'd rather buy and ipad than a wii U. besides, i already have two iphones so i'm set!

between this, vita integration, ipad in general ... the wii U is far from U-nique and it hasn't even released yet. so irrelevant probably isn't the right word but innovative isn't the right word either.

Just remember, the iPad is going to set you back about $150 more than a WiiU and will be replaced by a better model in a year.

Seriously though, it should be about the games and all this Microsoft presser wanted to make me do was get a new laptop for home before I got stuck with W8.

This. I did it for my first laptop, I got one of the last available with XP before getting stuck with Vista, now I'll have to do the same about Win 7 before Win 8 become the only version installed.

About Smart Glass, MS made it for greed the proprietary and crippled version of a good idea:

- the good idea would be writing protocols, drivers and programs to use smartphones and tablets for those purposes

- a possible proprietary but not excessively crippled version would be to limit the choice to Windows running ones

- the totally crippled proprietary version is allowing only Windows 8

Edit: some of the sources cited in the OP say it will be cross-platform, not Win 8-only (for the part regarding the phone or tablet), this could widen its audience and success, but about its effects on WiiU, PS3 already offered many of its functions before and nobody said they make Wii U tablet irrelevant. Anyhow, what prevents Ninty from offering these functions too? 3rd party controllers already exist for Wii, Ninty could make it possible for gamers to use smartphones and tablets with enough functionalities and control axes as additional Wii U tablets.

Microsoft said during their own conference that Smartglass was for Android, iOS and Win7/8...

As for Nintendo copying it - what would the point of it be? It wouldn't offer any significant benefit, since they'd already have a tablet, and its obvious that in regards to how the WiiU operates that it may degrade performance (e.g. the citation of FPS dropping when a 2nd tablet is added).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
