I think it's because kids 13-18 often have self-esteem issues. You're young, you're unproven, you don't know how good or not good your friends are. A few years later, you've had a fair amount of life experiences, you start getting more respect from adults, and you have a good set of true friends. After that, you have enough courage to stand up for wacky things you like. Everyone else is more comfortable as well, so they are much less likely to attack you for it and may even keep an open mind.
