It is a form of backwards compatibility, just one that doesn't insure that people can play content they own.

So is the current method of selling games through the PSN Store.

Using that same logic, the Wii is b/c with the NES, SNES, N64, SMS, Genesis, C64, and arcade machines -- not just the Gamecube.

Personally, making you rebuy games to me is much ado about nothing.
