I got really swept up by three animes in the past.
Code Geass: A story of a school boys fight against a hostile nation that invaded Japan. Great story!
Stein's; Gate: A group of good for nothing scientists discover time travel more or less. After this everything goes wrong
Fate/ Stay Night: A group of mythological heroes are summoned into present day Japan where they have to fight it out for the Holy Grail. I really liked this one, but it's not as popular as the other two.
I'd put Steins; Gate as the best out of these three

Baccano: Based in the 50s a couple different gangs attack a train with different intentions. Throw in a couple immortals, and a psycopath, and you are left with tons of fun. I had trouble following this anime at first, but near the end I was really into it
