Sony will NEVER give up the PLAYSTAYTION and games division. It is currently the strongest entity that Sony has. Sony makes and does so much, that there are tons of other things they could close, sell, or shrink. Games would be the very last thing Sony would allow to be touched. Also, as old and storied as Sony is in Japan, the japanese government would never let Sony just go under without multiple bailouts......kinda like America did for the Car industry, because Sony has massive japanese employment.
Nintendo On the other hand, Nintendo isn't as large as Sony nor are they as diversified. One bad expensive console (WII U), and Nin could easily quit making home consoles and stick with DS portables, and still make AAA games for other consoles
