He was born in Italy, but moved here with his parents at a young age. For some crazy reason he never became a citizen. My Girlfriend was brought into this world here, but was first created in Italy. We will get into Abortion issues in some other thread. Anyways. during his life he has had multiple DUI's and other minor crimes. Last year, he was in his van sleeping in a 7/11 parking lot. Some police came over to see what was going on. They woke him up and searched his van. Lo and behold the police officers discover some open bottles of Whiskey in his van. It did not matter that he was not driving, it only mattered that this was not his first rodeo and he was in the Van. So he was arrested and put into jail. Fast forward a few months. While in jail, the court system decided that enough is enough and they sentencing him to deportation back to Italy. Remember that he only lived there for a year as a child. He does not speak Italian.... He knows nobody there..... What is this all about? I understand that a Mexican who comes up here and is deported for breaking the law. That makes sense because he has a home there, speaks the language, and all the other perks you get from living in a country for most of your life. But my GF's Brother is basically an American.
Is this right? Should there have been an exeption to the rule here? I think so, but now he is being sent , today, overseas via tax payers expense and some large jet to Italy to live the rest of his life as a bum. He can never come back here. There is a possibility of moving to Canada or Australia where we have family though. Is there anyone on this site who lives in Italy that knows of any agencies or churches over there that can get him up and running? |
You would need to talk to an immigration expert, for which there are free resources. However, I'm guessing with him being deported as we speak, it's too late.
The biggest problem is his criminal history. Had he been an upstanding citizen, contributing to society the judge may have offered an option. However, it sounds like as soon as it became an immigration decision an lawyer who deals with immigration issues should have been consulted.
Certainly his parent's would have been responsible for his citizenship up until he was 18, but then it was his responsibility once he turned 18.
