Funny, I just beat thoe police station last night and I totally agree it was dragging on too long. I got pretty mad at the cover system and aiming system too by the end playing on hard with no Auto aim. Because Max often dies as you probably noticed even when he still has pain killers in certain situations. Or how the slow down camara often is too slow to save you by shooting the guy who shot you. It was fine early, but by late in the game it got more challenging and the flukes I mentioned killed me a lot. I did beat the game and the airport is fun, but due to the problems you kind of just want it to end. Unfortunate as I really enjoyed the first to parts. I agree the story really is one of the best things in the game. I did find Max a little too depressing, but the adult theme and the fact the story relates to crime rings in real life actually is really cool. I still say it is better than gears 2 and 3, but the bugs just bring it down if you set the game to hard and autoaim. still give it an 8.5/10. |
I got through finally then went to bed at the start of the airport. I was kinda afraid it would be another boring drag after it started off in the baggage handling area.
You're pretty generous with your score, I give it a 6.5. The story and especially Max's monologues are great but I'm tired of the nonsense level layouts that so many tps/fps games fall victim too. I much prefer the level layout from something like SH downpour.
The overuse of effects and camera wobble during cutscenes make it tiring to watch at times and I still haven't got used to the laggy movement scheme or found a good setup for aiming.
The one last chance to save yourself by shooting your attacker camera is a nice addition but it often doesn't work. It makes some mini bosses trivial since you only need one shot in this mode instead of pumping them full of lead. It always leaves you exposed lying on the floor afterwards with pretty much most of my health gone by the time he scrambles back up and into cover. And half the time it triggers with something obstructing your view and you just have to wait till time runs out before you can start again.
I'm using shoot dodge less and less. If you don't get everyone you're pretty much dead while trying to get back to your feet. Shoot dodging to fall behind cover is a tricky afair, one little snag and he aborts his dive making things only worse. Even when you succesfully dive behind a desk or something he still annoyingly exposes himself while getting up and into cover.
Some beautiful locations, interesting story and great monologue which makes looking for 'clues' a lot more interesting then it really is. But the gameplay doesn't hold up imo.
