It's 8 chapters + prologue by the way, some very short some long as hell - worst is 3 - where you play as...no, not spoiling.
But hang on, the best is yet to come. Chapter 5, if I'm not mistaken is superb.

from what I've played,the game is pretty superb especially the chracters...the combat system is pretty weak in terms of depth though

Combat is actually very very deep. Try to master the rhythm based aspect now, or else you'll be in trouble later. You can do 16 hit combos with it. One character has a ability to listen to the heartbeat of enemies (rhythm of the music combo), use it constantly to get the hang of it.

Another thing to watch is the HP counter in mother... you'll receive a lot of mortal hits from enemies, but you have some time to either kill the enemy of heal yourself before the counter reaches zero.

I find the rythm aspect difficult at some times like the part of the song without the drumbeat,

Yeah, it's very hard. Ear-phones are your buddies, though.
They help a lot. But are you playing on the PC, GBA or DS? I tried to play on the DS once and I felt the beating was off a bit (or I was highly untrained)
