From my experience with the game, if you didn't know where the ball was headed, you're not going to make it to the circle in time. In general, the circles only seem to appear on slower, easier to return shots.
There is indeed nothing wrong with Mario Tennis's gameplay. It's rock solid, and addictive as hell. Unfortunately, the whole package is a bit slimmer than I'd like. Single player mode is somewhat weak, 3D effects are nonexistant, and the online is smooth but barebones. 6.5 is a bit harsh. Somewhere between 7 and 8 would have been more fitting.
