Over-reliance is such a strong word; It is not vital but cross-platform is definitely a feature everybody should appreciate. It would certainly be appreciated if we receive definite new IPs regarding such feature but it's not Sony's fault their audience are deeply captivated with rehashed IPs with similar genres.
Conservatively, Mario (etc) is just appropriately well-managed by Nintendo. I suppose what sells well is what organizations tend to focus on. It's capitalism.
