Watching TV is an accepted hobby in society whereas Video Games is a much younger industry and not as influencing as television. Take a look at the situation of alcohol. It's ok to consume a lot of alcohol but taking a small amount of drugs can lead to tons of problems.
When I'm talking with people about video games they seem to be interested in the subject or they're often explaining their connection to it (for instance, they played Tetris in their younger days). The verdict 'loser' is probably linked to the amount of time you are spending on video games or to the genre you are playing. For me, it's sometimes hard to justify my pleasure when playing Pokémon ;).
