I think $299 is the golden ticket. Anything lower and they're taking a loss in order to sell faster, anything higher and they're making a tidy profit on each unit sold but after the holiday season sales will drop off a cliff until the following Q4.
I would even be fine with $349, which seems the most likely price if they're anticipating sell-out situations during launch. If it's "always sold out" it will help sales since people always want what they can't have.
