Great article. I never knew there were co-processors in snes cartridges.
I'm afraid it's too late for my floppy disk collection. The 5.25" were already unreadable 10 years ago and I don't have a drive for either format nowadays anyway. I guess the 3.5" ones are full or errors too by now.
I recently found out flash cards are far from reliable too. Inserting my 8gb card in the card reader slightly wrong resulted in total failure. Somehow 2 of the fragile pins ended up in the same hole which caused windows 7 to corrupt the file system. Then when windows 7 tried it's scan & fix on another pc it made it worse.
I managed to only recover 1.8gb out of 8 with a recovery program.
Writable dvd's are not a solution either

I guess the only option is to buy a new external hdd every so many years and copy everything over while always keeping it on multiple drives. I've had plenty hdd failures but at least it's easier then rewrite stacks of dvd's every 10 years.
