The PS3 could be argued a failure, but not because of goals & expectations imo. Using goals & expectations, one could say the Xbox 360 was also a failure. Microsoft obviously didn't want 2nd place. Or you could say the Wii was a failure because Nintendo wanted to get great 3rd party support. Marketshare & profitability are the main determinants of success imo.

The Wii is a mixed success because of Nintendo's lack of follow-through, not because of the lack of third party support. The Xbox 360 is also only a mixed success because they became the real PS2-type successor when the PS2-paradigm became outdated.
