Strange, he looks less like a pile of skid marked cereal packets than he ever has before in that image. Then you go on to say you like the gritty surroundings. Master Chief will always be a generic packet of corn flakes to me but he looks like a good pack here.

I can't pinpoint the quality(ies) that seem off to me, but his armor just looks different (also looks like he has less armor on) and he looks so... nimble and agile and less like the tank he used to be. It just seems off from how I traditionally view the chief.

Yep, they changed the armor from what it was like in past games (and I really like it!). Also there's a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why it would change. Mljorner armour has nano-bots that repair and upgrade the suit of armour during cryo sleep, and the Chief has been in cryo for quite a long time. Likewise I believe I read somewhere that Cortana also upgraded his armour (probably by telling the nano-bots what to do for upgrades)
