According to a report at Kotaku AU, Australian GAME stores this morning received an email from head office confirming the company has gone into administration. These reports have now been confirmed by administrators PriceWaterhouseCooper (see update below).

Staff members of GAME Australia also advised Kotaku AU that some GAME outlets would not stock Diablo III "due to payment issues with its shipping companies".

The news follows local managing director Paul Yardley's announcement in March that GAME Australia could be up for sale in light of parent company The GAME Group plc's suspension of trading. According to our report, the future of the Australian business was uncertain if no "white knight" investor materialised.

UPDATE: PriceWaterhouseCoopers has been appointed administrators of GAME Australia, according to a statement released by PwC earlier today. In the statement, PwC partner Kate Warwick announced that GAME would continue trading for the foreseeable future.

"Initially we will continue to trade all stores, operating these on as close to a 'business as usual' mode as possible whilst we get a clearer understanding of the current state of the business and actively pursue options to secure its future."

Warwick went on to address the impact GAME's condition in the UK has had on Australian operations, identifying an "ambitious roll-out combined with the current soft retail environment" as key factors.

"Prior to our appointment, the company's (Australian) management had been exploring interest in investing in the business with a number of parties and we will look to see whether this interest can be harnessed to continue the business or part of it through the voluntary administration process."

Warwick also addressed customers in possession of GAME loyalty cards, gift cards and vouchers: "We are working on schemes aimed at giving customers some return on these claims if they are used to make additional purchases."
