How is it absurd? THC, which is the ingredient in weed that gets you high, comes in the form of a bud on a plant. It's easiest just to dry out the bud and smoke it similar to tobacco. To cook with it you simmer the weed in oil or butter for an hour and it extracts the THC and you throw away the plant making it almost pure THC. Extracting the THC out of the butter would be difficult and expensive so you just mix the butter with something and eat it.
Weed is illegal so it's not like you can go to the store and get THC crystals. You get the plant then do what must be done to get the THC in your body. Also, you can't just eat the plant and get high it just doesn't work that well.
