It's not impossible that they could be due to ingrown hairs. I had one for the longest time during my late teens and early twenties. A non-painful bump on my anus, The only time it bleed or became painful was when I would have acidic bowel movements. Eventually though, it did become itchy, painful, then pop.
Having said that, I would also recommend just making an appointment with your doctor. Stop worrying about embarrassment. As you get older, doctors find more places to stick their fingers, or point cameras. It's all a part of growing older in today's modern medicine.
