I Lived in Preston for 2 years, thats about 45 minutes (train ride) from Manchester, I did not enjoy the UK...AT ALL, I mean that is just me, I also have visited Toronto and I will tell you their winter might be worse than yours, I recommend NYC or Miami, great multicultural diversity, awesome party scene, The most beautiful girls (thanks to that diversity mentioned) specially in Miami, great gaming communties, and Florida's weather is truly a joy, gets a little hot, but believe me, the way girls dress down here in Summer you'll be thankful and also every other place in US i ever been, there seems to be a lot of overweight, Miami is not like that!
