I dont know how it is in France... but in the UK a large portion of people that vote for the Labour party are very confused...  A hell of a lot of working class people want to limit immigration, dont like Europe, hate big government, are opposed to gay rights etc etc... and yet they always have and always will vote Labour.  They vote left, when they should vote right.

and its why its a pity we cant have some kind of test prior to a vote counting.  It helps if someone knows for what they are voting.  I know, I know, thats not democratic... but it is infuriating sometimes how totally unaware whole swaithes of the population are.

You could always do blind ballot voting.  That is rather then the parties names they are faced with a short summary of the parties platform.

In ohio some elected officials are on the ballot only by name and it's actually illegal to put down the party affiliation so you have to go just by party affiliation.

Judges i think.

As I reacall conservative judges almost always win.
